Love for America
Day 45: 4th of July Festivities. We are becoming increasingly good at making our own indoor fun while outdoor celebrations take place. Although we would love to be sitting in a park waiting to risk our lives for the sake of some pyrotechnic beauty, we figured cookies were the next best thing. Happy 4th to everyone! Stay Safe, and from one gimp to the next.. keep your extremities safe! Peace....
Super Sophie to the Rescue!
Day 44: Create a trading card. There are not enough “thank you’s” or “i love you’s” in the world to express just how absolutely grateful I am for everything Soph has done and continues doing since the hip surgery. ‘Super Sophie’ is an understatement. Her patients and unconditional love not only makes me a better person, but it makes these endless...
Day 43: Use typical children’s art supplies in a non traditional way. This year, due to the ol’ hip surgery, we sadly had to miss the ever-so-entertaining pride parade. You may remember these lil ladies from the pillow I made earlier this year; What a perfect fit for our Pride Project! Soph has not only been an absolutely wonderful nurse, but with my lack of mobility, her creative...
Day 42: Repurpose old mail for something new. In our attempt to save up for a new TV, the Money Monster was born!
Haiku For You
Day 41: Write a haiku about something that has happened hai·ku[hahy-koo] noun A Japanese poem of seventeen syllables, in three lines of five, seven, and five.
Playing with Pepperoni
Day 40: Pizza creation “When the moon hits you’re eye like a big pizza pie, thats amore!”
Date Night Jar
Day 39: Explore with something new “It’s always better when we’re together.” -Jack Johnson Each stick has a different date idea ranging from new restaurants, to recording our next hit music video. haha! Soph came up with the great idea to color the back of each stick as we complete them to continually brighten up the jar!
Day 38: Use only materials from the bathroom
Day 37: Decorate a cake or cookie. Spring colored Sixlette candy :)
Egg Dying Disaster
Day 36: Work with food dye. Let me just start by saying Easter egg dying was SO MUCH more fun when Mom was in charge of the egg prepping. I quite prefer my naive mentality now that I know the seemingly endless process you encounter BEFORE you can even think about turning those little white eggs any sort of color. By the time the eggs made it to the table, I’m pretty positive there were...
We Heart Grilled Cheese
Day 35: Make something with your dinner before you eat it.
Day 34: Use [marker] pens as your material/inspiration. “What a feeling in my soul, love burns brighter than sunshine.” -Aqualung
Lovely Little Bird Houses
Day 33: [Sophie’s Pick] “If you’re a bird, I’m a bird.” - The Notebook In one of our multiple trips to Michael’s, we came across a variety of plain wooden birdhouses that Soph fell in love with. As our room revamp progresses, these little guys will be hung in some sort of mobile fashion! Such an easy, but huge change a little paper and paint did!
Tie Dye Party
Day 32: Work only with green colored materials. Today I learned the beauty in being a month behind! ;) St. Patty’s day was a perfect opportunity for an all green challenge. Even better? Why not make an entire girls night tie dye party out of it! So, with the lovely Darcy Wood in tow, we dyed not only ONE, but in fact, 5 shirts. (One for Brody too, of course!) A note to those who embark...
Diet Coke & A Dream
Day 31: Use a new ingredient to bake I had to come to terms with the fact that there would inevitably be ‘failures’ along the way; Trial & Error, per say. In the past, I have successfully made eggless cakes using sprite (for white cakes) or diet coke (for dark cakes). Being without the necessary brownie ingredients, I thought I’d try my luck and adapt the trick....
The Never Ending Game of Catch Up
Alrighty, let’s get on top of this! Boy, oh boy. Did I learn quickly how easy it is to get off course! One missed day turns into four missed days… turns into… A MONTH BEHIND?? I’ll admit, the catch up process has been both stressful and anxiety ridden, but let’s be honest; Sometimes life gets in the way! And you know what? It’s totally fine! Though I have...
Found Object Love
Day 30: Create something out of a found object. Love is all around us, if we only open our eyes! While I was walking Brody around the block, I spotted this little guy; An already perfectly shaped found object! I guess I realized I must have an eye for these things when the friend walking with me questioned, “How the hell did you see that?!”
A Little TLC
Day 29: [today needed it’s own caption] Sometimes you just need a little pick-me-up lovin! :)
Too Much Work, Not Enough Play. Sorry for the...
Hi Friends & Followers! The work schedule has been a little crazy lately, so free time has been sparse. I promise things will be up and moving again shortly! Stay inspired and continue to check back! -Brittany
Day 28: Work with wire. It seems to be a common occurance, but like many of my previous posts, this is also a first attempt; this time at working with wire. I love quotes, lyrics, and inspirational sayings of all sorts, so I had a feeling I’d use this opportunity to try out writing with wire. I honestly couldn’t believe how naturally it came to me. Not only did the end result...
Light Script Love
Day 27: Make something using a material that will dissipate quickly. Using a low shutter speed on the camera makes “glow” writing possible, and oh-so-fun! I just wanted to keep playing!
Recycled Jar How-to
Day 26: Create instructions that others can use to make something. Supplies: -Jar/Bottle/Glass Container -Paint (I used Acrylic paint in flat & metallic finishes) 1. If you are using a recycled jar/bottle with a label, you are going to want to remove it. (unless you are choosing to keep a specific label still on the bottle, you’re call!) Unfortunately, some packaging pros get a...
Notebook Paper Candle Holders
Day 25: Use traditional school materials non traditionally. I love the tasks that challenge you to take something you are use to using one way, and finding a new creative way to use it! Simply by taking markers and coloring in various lines of some college ruled notebook paper, I made us some Valentine candle holders! To avoid any paper/flame hazards, be sure to use electronic tea lights...
And They Lived Happily Ever After
Day 24: Today, bring out your inner child and work with toys. Thank goodness for being a nanny! Toys are the one thing I have at my disposal on a daily basis. Because today’s little people are both boys, the female figurines in the house were limited. Luckily, since Sophie and I hear that we look alike all the the time, using duplicate Belle characters wastn’t too far off! ha! Not...
Valentines Door Hanger
Day 23: Work with nature as you’re inspiration today.
Recycled Crayon Hearts
Day 22: Dig in the recycling bin for all of todays materials.
Panda & Monkey Love
Day 21: Write a 10 word story & illustrate it. Panda Meets Monkey Both Are Funky And Fall In Love
Salt Dough Stones
Day 20: Buy or make some clay to use in today’s project.
Lemonade Ice Hearts
Day 19: Create something that floats on water. Since both Sophie and I love popsicles and lemon ice, among many other frozen treats, some home made lemon-ice hearts was perfect. For the hearts, I used a silicone heart cupcake pan, and the vibrantly colored Calypso Lemonade worked perfectly for that added touch! Just so happens they float, too!
Stereo Hearts Mix Tape
Day 18: Work with things you find in your car. “My heart’s a stereo, it beats for you so listen close.” -Gym Class Heros With a blank CD and some paper from the car, a new mix tape and CD case were born.
Thank you for being a Friend
Day 17: Make something inspired by and/or goes over an eye. Glasses Brooch was used as a costume piece on set of The Golden Girls. What can I say, I have and always will absolutely LOVE the Golden Girls. So much so, that I own the dvds. There was a good chunk of time when we would watch it every night before we’d fall asleep. This past August, for Sophie’s birthday, I bid on this...
Sponge Stamped Hearts
Day 16: Make a unique print by cutting a sponge and use it as a stamp. Soon to be a valentine decoration :)
Paper Fortune Cookie
Day 15: Create something by folding paper. Fun Fact: Sophie had custom fortune cookies made for her high school graduation party.
Itty Bitty Love Letter
Day 14: How small can you work? “Signed. Sealed. Delivered. I’m Yours.” -Stevie Wonder
Heart Shaped Tea Bag
Day 13: Use tea leaves or tea bags to create something today.
White On White Quote Canvas
Day 12: Create or alter something so that it disappears into its background. “So don’t you worry your pretty little mind. People throw rocks at things that shine. And life makes love look hard. The stakes are high, the water’s rough…But this love is ours.” -Taylor Swift, Ours
Dry Erase Board Love
Day 11: Pick a medium you’re comfortable and work with your non-dominant hand. Lucky for me, I’ve already been put through this challenge for a good chunk of my time in design school. After my dominant right hand was slammed shut in the hinge part of a car door, I was left, well, using my left hand for everything. I chose to do a dry erase board, because since Sophie is left handed,...
Sophie the Snowman
Day 10: Use water as your medium/inspiration today. The first big snow storm of the year couldn’t have come on a more perfect day!
Good Morning Sunshine
Day 9: Make something with your breakfast before you eat it. Rice Chex Cereal :)
Book Page Flower
Day 8: Use pages of a book to make something new. As a designer, one of my favorite parts of the creative process is adding little details where people least expect them. For this flower, the details are in the pages chosen for the petals. Straying away from any arbitrary book laying around, I in turn chose to use the “Human Sexuality” chapter out of an Evolution book Sophie had....
Fabric Paint Stenciled Pillow
Day 7: Make a stencil and use it in your work. Wow! One week down! If I’ve made it through one, I can totally handle the next 71 right?? ha! I am so grateful for the overwhelmingly positive response I’ve received in these first seven days, so thank you! Soph and I are in the process of redoing our bedroom, so this concept has been floating around in the creativity box we call my...
Hand Carved Apple Stamp
Day 6: Use the first fruit or vegetable you see in your fridge. For this project, we were back in the hospital visiting my mom, so I had to improvise. Thankfully, Aunt Lorraine had some toothpicks and an extra apple with her! And the ink…some cheap pink lipstick from the bottom of Mom’s purse, ha! Given the nights circumstances, I’d say I made due just fine! (…even if...
Day 5: Work with things you collect in your home. Between my tshirt collection, and Soph’s headband collection, a new tshirt headband seemed only appropriate!
Love for Human Rights
Day 4: Take a 5 minute walk. Make something where ever you end with whatever is around you. Leave it for others to find. Nature meets the Human Rights Campaign Logo. Keep your eye’s out for this little treasure, Chicago!
Origami Dollar Hearts
Day 3: Make something out of paper. Do not use sissors, glue, or draw on it. “I don’t care too much for money, money can’t buy me love.” -The Beatles Sitting in a hospital room with nothing but some latex gloves and apple juice cups, this prompt could not have come at a more appropriate time! Given my lack of any and all paper supplies except some crisp new single...
Panda Sugar Cookie Dough
Day 2: What’s [her] favorite animal? Use it as today’s inpiration. Wow! Can I just say how excited I am with how these turned out. Since Sophie’s favorite animal is a Panda, I have had this panda bread inspiration saved on my computer for awhile now, so I was excited to make it my own. I can genuinely say I had NO plan, or idea of what I was doing going in to this; All I knew...
Bird & Worm Shrinky Dink Magnets
Day 1: Start Small… Make something that fits in the palm of your hand. “You’re the bird, I’m the worm and it’s plain to see that we were meant to be.” -Owl City, The Bird and the Worm
To: My Other Half
Welcome! I am so excited to be beginning this process. First, I am Brittany, and will be one of your leading ladies in this not-yet-told story. I just recently bought the Make Something 365 daily creativity journal from Paper Source. Upon buying it, I found the most daunting part to be choosing my year long theme/subject/medium; I was stuck before I even began. Then one night, it clicked! I...
